MEA Energy Association
MEA Energy Association, formerly known as the Midwest Gas Association (MGA), has a rich history that spans over 115 years. It all started in 1905 when a group of local gas companies gathered in Des Moines, Iowa to share problems and ideas. Over the years, MEA has grown substantially and now serves nearly 100 gas and electric energy delivery companies.
Some key milestones in their history include the first Gas Operations Conference in 1921, the passing of the Natural Gas Act in 1938, and the hiring of the association's first employee in 1962. MEA has been at the forefront of industry developments, such as the implementation of Operator Qualification (OQ) Rule and the creation of consensus-based tests and learning materials for the entire gas industry.
In 1998, MEA expanded its membership to include electric-only distribution companies and became known as Midwest ENERGY Association (MEA). They introduced the Energy Training Network (now called EnergyU), a platform offering gas, electric, safety, and liquids learning modules. In recent years, MEA has embraced renewable energy and launched initiatives like Energetic Women to prepare women for leadership roles in operations and engineering.
Today, MEA continues to empower the energy industry through education, leadership development, and industry connections. They offer a wide range of courses and resources on topics such as OQ compliance, gas operations, electric operations, leadership development, environmental practices, HR/talent management, procurement planning, transportation & fleet management, and more.
